Reuben is an active and precocious 9-year-old who loves soccer, learning Latin (yes, really), and talking about the mystery of God. Since birth, he has lived with bladder exstrophy—a rare condition where the bladder forms outside the body. As an infant, Reuben underwent major reconstructive surgery to repair what could be repaired at the time, but full continence was never possible with that surgery alone.
This year, we have an extraordinary opportunity. A new surgical procedure—only available in the US for less than a year—is being offered at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio. An incredible surgeon from London joins with a specialized team there to perform a reconstruction that could give Reuben something he's never had: a chance at continence, and a future where having biological children wouldn't require medical intervention. Without this surgery, Reuben's options are limited to wearing diapers for the rest of his life or having a permanent catheter port, which increases infection risk and would significantly impact his ability to do the things he loves, like compete in sports without worrying about medical logistics in the middle of a tournament.
The surgery is extensive, and recovery requires at least two weeks in Ohio followed by two months of healing at home. As a single mom with a private therapy practice, this means significant time away from work and income. We are raising funds for:
• Travel (flights for me and Reuben)
• Food and daily expenses while we're there
• Lost income during time away from my practice
• Unexpected costs that come with medical travel
Every dollar helps, and every share matters just as much. We also deeply appreciate any prayers or spiritual support you can offer—we need more than just financial help to carry us through this journey. Thank you for being part of Reuben's village.
