Help Restore the Sacred Tombs of Five Sufi Masters in Fez

I am Professor Yousef Casewit, a scholar of Moroccan Sufism at the University of Chicago Divinity School. My work explores the rich spiritual heritage of al-Andalus and the Maghrib, where I grew up, and highlights its profound teachings and enduring relevance in the modern world.

While conducting research in Fez in April 2024, I was deeply saddened to witness the deterioration and desecration of a small sacred enclosure housing the tombs of five extraordinary Sufi masters from the Shadhiliyya and Qadiriyya lineages. These revered figures, resting in the historic Bab Futuh cemetery, were pillars of spiritual devotion, scholarly excellence, and social engagement, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire seekers of knowledge and divine love.

I am seeking your support to raise funds for the restoration of this sacred site, preserving the memory and sanctity of these extraordinary Sufi shaykhs for generations to come. Your contribution will help restore and preserve the tombs of:

1. Sidi M’hammed ibn ‘Abdullah Ma’n al-Andalusi (d. 1652)
The founder of the Shadhiliyya Ma’aniyya tradition of Moroccan Shadhili Sufism. He was known for his humility, scholarship, and spiritual guidance. A disciple of the renowned Shaykhs Yusuf and ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Fasi, he attracted countless followers and established the zāwiya that became a beacon of devotion and learning in 17th century Fes.

2. Sidi Qasim al-Khassasi (d. 1673)
A devout merchant and illiterate Sufi guide who owned a small store near Mulay Idris, he is famed for coining the Shadhili expression "My body is in the hanut [store] and my heart is in the malakut [celestial realm]." Sidi Qasim upheld the spiritual leadership of the Ma’'n tradition during a time of political and social upheaval. His dedication ensured the continuity of the order despite challenges.

3. Sidi Ahmad ibn M’hammed ibn ‘Abdullah (d. 1708)
The son of Sidi M'hammad and the most famous of the 'Abdullawi tradition, he was a prominent leader who expanded the zāwiya, preserving and enriching the teachings of his father and predecessors, leaving a lasting impact on Moroccan spiritual and scholarly life.

4. Sidi Muhammad ibn Ahmad (d. 1722)
Known for his piety and contributions to the zāwiya community, he carried forward the familial legacy of spiritual leadership.

5. Sidi al-‘Arabi ibn Ahmad (d. 1752)
A guiding light in his era, Sidi al-‘Arabi continued the work of his father and brother, embodying the virtues of the Shadhili and Qadiri paths. He was the Shaykh of Sidi 'Ali al-Jamal (d. 1780), who in turn was the Shaykh of Mulay al-'Arabi al-Darqawi (d. 1832), and founder of the Shadhiliyya Darqawiyya order.

These luminaries were key figures in the Fasiyya Shadhiliyya community, directly influencing great masters like Sidi ‘Ali al-Jamal and Mulay al-‘Arabi al-Darqawi, whose teachings resonate across the Islamic world.

Why This Project Matters

The tombs of these saints are not just historical sites; they are spaces of baraka (blessing), reflection, and inspiration. Over time, the structures have deteriorated and are now in urgent need of repair. Restoring them will:
Honor the legacy of these great scholars and saints.
Preserve a vital piece of Islamic heritage for future generations.
Provide a dignified resting place that reflects the sanctity of their lives.

With the permission of the tomb’s caretaker and the guidance of skilled masons, we aim to complete the restoration work responsibly and respectfully.
