Help Restore the Haines Household

On Friday July 23rd, Shana Haines, her partner Jamie Haines, and Tara McCall invited Shana's graduate cohort to the Haines Household. The purpose of the gathering was to celebrate. Shana and her cohort have been meeting weekly over zoom for the better part of a year to make headway on their dissertations. And headway they've made. The evening was to be celebratory and downright silly, full of laughter and libations and maybe even some sleep.

But what started as a meaningful gathering of friends and loved ones turned quickly nightmarish. While at the table eating dinner, one cohort member noticed smoke and flickering light behind the kitchen door. A grease fire had broken out. What ensued was a surreal and devastating turn of events, including rapid evacuation, grabbing precious pets and items, and waiting for the fire department heroes to do their job.

While no person was physically harmed by the fire, Tara’s beloved cat, Mowgli, was rushed to the emergency vet but sadly passed from smoke inhalation. The Haines kitchen is an unrecognizable space of blackened ash and melted appliances. And the damage of black smoke goes beyond the kitchen to the whole rest of the house.

Major repairs, cleaning, and replacement/restoration of furniture is critical for the return of the Haines Household to livable home. While insurance will be covering much of these costs, the cost of the deductible, emergency pet fees, travel funds for temporary housing, and life costs remain imminent for the Haines Household.
