The Corner Farm Fire Recovery - I own and operate The Corner Farm, a small, woman-owned regenerative farm on 10 acres in Spokane, Washington. 5 acres of my farm burned in the Fairview Fire, which started on August 1, 2026, and swept through almost 1,000 acres within hours. Thankfully, my son and I evacuated safely within minutes, and my home, my chickens, and my main growing areas were saved. Still, walking the my burned fence lines and trying to process how much was lost has been harrowing. As a farmer, my land means more to me than my home, and it’s my livelihood.
Why I’m Asking for Support - So many people have reached out to ask how they can help my son and me, and whether they can contribute financially so The Corner Farm has a future, so I created this page. I am still working through the next steps after being displaced during this nine-day evacuation, while also navigating lost farm income and crop damage.
Impact on the Farm - I grow organically and specialize in culinary herbs, cut flowers, and a diverse variety of fruits and vegetables. Although not all my farm burned, the effects of smoke and ash have been devastating, and I am deeply concerned about erosion and long-term ecological damage to the soil.
I am grateful to everyone who has reached out to buy produce or flowers in support of the farm. I tried to keep operations as "normal" as possible, but doing markets while still under evacuation has been exhausting. The National Guard allowed access to return to the farm under evacuation to water crops and feed my chickens; without that access, I would have lost all my plants from lack of water. I will continue to bring what I can to markets and fulfill wholesale orders as I am able, but the financial impact of the fire has already been significant, and breathing in smoke while trying to work outside has taken its toll.
How Donations Will Help - If you would like to support The Corner Farm, donations will help with immediate needs and the ongoing recovery of the farm.
· Immediate displacement needs for my son and me
· Restocking our refrigerator and freezers after the power outage made most of our food unsalvageable
· Assist with ongoing farm operating expenses, impacted by missed markets and limited harvest
· Recovery from crop damage, smoke exposure, and delayed farm work such as harvesting, weeding, pruning, staking tomatoes, and other seasonal tasks
Farming is not an easy endeavor, and this has already been one of the most challenging years for me, even before the fire. For many people, the Fairview Fire would be the breaking point and call it quits. However, for those who know me, they know I wake up with grit and determination, and despite all that has happened, I have chosen to be resilient and forge ahead.
Long-Term Recovery and Land Stewardship - Funds raised will also support long-term efforts to reduce fire danger on the farm and restore the land through rewilding and preservation work. With nearly 1,000 acres burned in the Fairview Fire, much of which was forested, many animals had to flee for their lives and took refuge in the grove of trees on and along my property, which did not burn. This area is home to deer, moose, owls, rabbits, quail, and many other animals, so preserving this land is vital, and this fire was a reality check that I need to do more for my land.
Gratitude - Thank you to the firefighters and first responders who worked around the clock to protect our community. I am also deeply grateful to the local farmers who created plow lines in the path of the flames, helping save my home and others. My heart goes out to everyone affected by the Spokane Complex fires, those who were evacuated or displaced, and especially those who lost homes, memories, land, and/or pets. Each person’s experience is different, and every story deserves care, sensitivity, and respect, not comparison.
In support of my community, I will be offering “fire flower” posy bouquets for free pickup at various locations while supplies last during this growing season. These will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. I am fortunate to still have flowers, plants, and soil to care for, and I know the healing that kind of beauty can bring.
