Help Restore Makerspace after Burglary

WE GOT ROBBED.

You know you're onto something good, when the world is doing its very best to stop you. But that won't stop us.

We are in the process of opening a makerspace in San Antonio, TX. The plan is to open in mid-October with a fully stocked woodshop, ceramic studio, printmaking studio, and digital fabrication lab with 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machining.

What Happened?

Over the past few years, we've been collecting a bunch of tools to bring to the makerspace, and we've been storing them in a storage unit. On Aug 15th, we went to our storage unit and saw a lock had been placed on our unit, and our lock was missing. We called SAPD, and they helped us open our unit. And to our surprise, our entire storage unit had been turned into a giant heap. They had gone through EVERYTHING. Luckily, they only took one load of stuff, but of course they grabbed only the most valuable items they could find. All in all, we lost about $4,000-$5,000 of stolen goods, along with some damage of items that they carelessly destroyed.

Items they stole include:
  • Omtech Industrial Chiller Unit for our laser cutter
  • Brother Printer
  • A one-of-a-kind metal engraver
  • An entire box of resin supplies and pigments, worth about $900
  • A Kobalt rolling stand for a table saw
  • A collection of very high quality router bits, forstner bits, and countersink bits.
  • Some KN95 masks and hair ties
  • 2x Grr-ripper push blocks
  • Lathe face shield
  • BOW Products featherboard
  • UV and fluorescent lightbulbs
  • A large bin of power tools from my wife's grandfather
  • A large bin of hand tools from my wife's grandfather
  • A Suizan Ryoba saw
  • A digital micrometer
  • And probably a lot more that we haven't accounted for yet.

Now we do have $5,000 of insurance coverage on the unit. However, from what we can tell, it only covers paid value of items, not replacement value. Since many of these items were gifts or found on FB marketplace for cheap, it will be very difficult to recover as much as we truly lost with just insurance. Along with that, we have no idea how long it will take to get the money from insurance. In the meantime, we're having to pick up the tab for anything that we need to immediately open our space.

How Can I Help?

All cash donations will go directly to replacing those missing items. We also have an Amazon wishlist available for anyone who wishes to purchase specific items: AMAZON WISHLIST (To be fair, this wishlist also includes items that were not stolen, but we will need before opening).

Other Info

SAPD does have fingerprints and a possible blood sample to catch this jerk. We also may get camera footage from the storage facility. On top of that, we've found many of our missing items for sale on FB marketplace and OfferUp. So with all of those things, I'm hoping that we can catch this person and slap them with a big fat felony.

Thank you all for your support during this tough time. We have some big plans for this makerspace, and we can't wait to share it with all of San Antonio.
