Help us bring PERFUGIUM MISERIS back to Ramsgate Royal Harbour and create a ten-year public artwork celebrating the harbour’s historic role as a place of refuge.
UPDATE: ART GIVEAWAY!
When we reach our next fundraising target of £2000, one lucky donor will win a small-scale Perfugium Miseris, created from the original 2016 artwork. More than an artwork, it’s a little piece of Ramsgate Harbour history and your very own safe haven to bring home. Every donor goes into the hat, and one winner will be chosen at random.
Take a look at the mini artwork, the last image in our photo carousel above!
For centuries, ships in distress looked to Ramsgate Royal Harbour as a place of refuge. Around the lighthouse are the words PERFUGIUM MISERIS – Latin for Refuge for Those in Need. It is more than a motto; it is a reminder of the compassion, courage and humanity that have shaped this remarkable place.
This tidal sculpture was originally commissioned in 2016 for Ramsgate Arts Festival. As the tide rose and fell, the words appeared across the harbour, bringing this little-known piece of Ramsgate's history vividly back into public view.
The response was fantastic. But the artwork was temporary.
Now we want to bring PERFUGIUM MISERIS back — creating a ten-year legacy for Ramsgate.
Our ambition is to celebrate the town's extraordinary stories and give Ramsgate a new cultural landmark for the next decade. We have already developed the concept and taken the project through early stages of planning and technical development. We now need to bring that work up to date and take the next steps towards making the ten-year installation possible.
But every major project has to start somewhere.
Your donation will help us take the next crucial steps, including renewing planning permission, updating the technical work and preparing the project for the larger funding applications that will be needed to create the artwork.
Whether you can give £3, £10 or £50, every contribution sends a powerful message that this project matters not just to us, but to the people who live here, visit here and believe in Ramsgate's future.
As the project develops, we aim to create opportunities for local people, schools and community groups to explore the history of Ramsgate Harbour and what the words PERFUGIUM MISERIS - "Refuge for Those in Need" mean to us today.
If you can't donate today, you can still help by sharing this page with friends, family and anyone who loves Ramsgate.
At Mooch, we've spent more than two decades creating meaningful public art with communities across the UK. We believe great public art should belong to everyone, tell the stories of a place and leave a lasting legacy.
