Help Restore Native Bird Care After the Flat Fire
Native Bird Care is a wild bird rescue center in Central Oregon, located on a 40-acre conservation property that also serves as a vital sanctuary and wildlife corridor.
Native Bird Care—and my husband and I personally—were victims of the Flat Fire, which exploded from a 200-acre grass fire to a raging inferno consuming 22,000 acres in just 3 days. Miraculously, our home and one of our best aviaries survived, thanks to the extraordinary dedication of firefighters who worked tirelessly to protect our community.
Unfortunately, we did suffer deep losses:
- Multiple buildings, aviaries, and outside facilities were destroyed.
- Much of our property’s unique habitat was burned, including stands of ancient juniper, stately ponderosa pine, and healthy native shrublands.
- Wildlife that once thrived among our five distinct micro-ecosystems must face habitat and forage changes.
This land, designated as a Wildlife Conservation Property with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, has always been a haven for birds and wildlife. It remains magical even in loss—and with restoration, it can flourish again.
Our Plan
- Rehabilitation work continues: We will begin limited bird intake as early as mid-winter, using the one aviary spared from the flames once it is treated for smoke damage.
- Habitat restoration: We will actively restore this incredible landscape and study how fire reshapes it, welcoming back returning species and supporting new visitors who need a fire-changed landscape.
- Facility rebuilding: With your help, we will rebuild aviaries and facilities critical to rescuing and rehabilitating injured and orphaned birds.
How You Can Help
- Donate – Your contributions will provide immediate support for restoring the landscape and rebuilding our facilities.
- Volunteer – We’ll need hands-on help for habitat restoration and reconstruction.
- Spread the Word – Share our story with others who care about protecting birds and their wild homes.
We have been rescuing and rehabilitating wild birds in Central Oregon for over 15 years. With your help, Native Bird Care will rise from this fire stronger than ever—continuing to provide lifesaving care for countless feathered patients and providing healthy habitat to a wide diversity of our local wildlife.
Thank you for your love, support, and generosity during this difficult time. Together, we can bring healing back to this land, its wildlife, and in-need birds who rely on specialty care of Native Bird Care.
And for those who join our on-site work parties—you may even spot a Black-backed Woodpecker, a fire-dependent species who could really use the burn area!
