In February 2020, my niece Megan began to lose some sight in her left eye from unknown causes. Then 7 months later, she lost all of her central vision in her right eye. After a year and a half of meeting with some of the top neuro-ophthalmologists in Pennsylvania, none of them have an answer as to why this happened. Megan is legally blind now in her right eye, and her left eye has significant visual field defects.
Currently, there is no treatment in the United States for Optic Neuropathy. Recently, Megan came across a treatment center in Germany. Doctor Anton Federov, at the Federov Vision Restoration Clinic in Berlin, specializes in a unique process that uses Electrical Stimulation and Vision Therapy to activate remaining optic nerve fibers that connect the eye to the brain, which can produce clearer sight, and significantly improve visual field loss. This clinic is extremely selective on who they are willing to treat. After reviewing her medical records, they feel that she would be an excellent candidate. The clinic currently has over a 75% success rate. The $41,000 would cover 2 trips (air, food, lodging) to Germany for the treatment, as well as the computer and software needed when at home. Unfortunately, Megan’s insurance does not cover the procedure since it is not in the US.
Detailed costs for 2 travelers: lodging - $2000, travel related - $5,000 (airfare, trains, shuttles, taxis), meals - $1,500, clinic & related - $12,000
Total - $20,500 for 1 trip. (2 trips are required)
Megan spent over 10 years working at the Milton Hershey school for underprivileged children, and also worked as a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Martin Meylin Middle School in Lancaster, PA. Her passion and love for those around her comes from her deep faith in God, and she is a positive light to everyone she meets.
