Over a month ago, Luna, our black lab, went into sudden kidney failure. She spent 5 days and nights at an emergency clinic receiving supportive care. It was discovered that a bacterial infection caused her acute kidney trauma. We believe she may have been infected when we evacuated for Hurricane Dorian. Luna loves to swim and while we were evacuated, she swam in an unknown lake, potentially becoming infected.
On day 5 her kidney enzyme levels were stable enough for her to come home, however, she has not fully recovered. She is still on blood pressure, antidiarrheal, anti-nausea, antacid, and appetite stimulant medications. Eating, which was once the highlight of her day, is now unappealing. Luna turned 3 years old this month, but did not want to celebrate with treats. Currently her favorite foods are maple sausages and soft boiled eggs, showing she is a brunch girl at heart.
Luna's kidney enzyme levels have not returned to normal and she is still in a diseased state. She still has a long recovery ahead of her, and treatment and medication have been overwhelmingly expensive.
This is not Luna's first experience with an emergency clinic. My husband and I rescued Luna when she was 13 weeks old. The day after we brought her home, she became ill and we found out she had parvovirus. That time she spent 10 days in the animal hospital, but she is a fighter and made it through! In the 3 years since this incident, Luna has become our best friend. She has the sweetest temperament, loves to cuddle with her parents and cat brother, and has an exuberance for life that we can only hope to achieve.
We know everyone thinks their dog is the best, but we truly hit the jackpot with Luna. We have been blessed to have Luna as a part of our lives and do not want to stop fighting for hers. The fundraising goal we have set is the amount we have already been charged for her care up to this point. If you feel led, please donate to help us be able to continue her care. We are still hoping that she can regain enough kidney function to maintain a normal lifestyle and live out many more years with us.
We appreciate each and every one of you,
Anna and Vlad

Yesterday morning, with a refrigerator full of maple sausages, I started a GoFundMe out of positive optimism. I had to take Luna to the vet due to her increased nausea and was mentally preparing for the next steps we would have to take in her wellness plan. Neither Vlad nor I were done fighting for her full recovery and what we learned devastated us. Based on her kidney enzyme levels and lack of progression towards healing, we were told that Luna now had chronic kidney disease and would maybe last a few months if placed on a feeding tube to sustain her nutrition and medication. After very long, heartbreaking conversations, Vlad and I decided that though we were more than willing to fight for her recovery, we were not willing to selfishly prolong her suffering. Last night we said goodbye to the best friend either of us could ask for. To all of those who have reached out to us or donated to our GoFundMe, thank you for all the love and support. We truly appreciate you all. “It’s like the tide, when it turns, it goes slowly, but can’t be stopped.” – Louisa May Alcott
