This is written on behalf of Jim, Jacky, and Brent whose historic home was completely lost to arson the weekend before Christmas. All funds collected will go directly to the Sawyer family.
What Happened?
- On December 21, the Saturday before Christmas, an arsonist set fire to the Sawyer's wooden garage adjacent to the back alley, which quickly spread to their 1906 historic home in the Anaheim Colony district.
- They were in the house at the time it started – they tragically watched as it burned for over 4 hours. The whole house and garage were destroyed except for the front wall and door.
- They were unable to salvage anything. We literally came away with just the clothes on our backs.
Post Fire
- They have lived there for 44 years. Jim and Jacky have long been retired, living entirely on social security. Brent is currently unable to work and was unemployed at the time of the fire.
- Jacky is fighting a brain tumor and losing her eyesight (~25%) as a result. Any extra money before the fire was going mostly toward medical-related expenses.
- The family is split now between two sets of relatives. The two dogs were saved from the fire but lost forever when they had to give them up to the shelter.
- They have received less than $1,000 for incidentals from the insurance company. Insurance is still waiting for the report/paperwork from the fire department.
What was / was not covered
- Thankfully, the house and garage were insured.
- The contents and displacement costs like lodging are not covered.
- They have been told by insurance that dirt removal and new dirt compaction are likely given the extent of damage. These are not covered and are very expensive given the adjuster's estimates.
- They are anticipating it may take a long time to receive any insurance money to replace the house.
How they need your help
- Help with replacing the day-to-day living items we need right away that we do not have readily available cash for, like clothes, shoes, jackets, etc.
- Help with replacing lost medical equipment from previous back injury (neuro stimulator) and out of pocket expenses related to tumor treatment.
- Help offset the cost of lodging for the next 12 months.
- Help with replacing all the lost furniture and fixtures like bedroom furniture, blankets, refrigerator, couch, dining table, etc.
