Below is a short story with a little history about the church:
Over a hundred years ago there was a small, stalwart community of descendants of Scots, Irish, English and even Dutch settlers from across the seas who landed in the USA, made their way through the Carolinas, and Georgia, to the wilds of South Mississippi where they settled, made their homes, and reared the children. Many of these descendants were of the traditional Presbyterian faith who eventually came to live in the small town of Leakesville, Mississippi, which had no Presbyterian church at that time; the closest being about ten miles away in a rural area. The decision of the group (made up of McInnis, McLeod, Pool, Maples, Amsler, McRae, and Sones families) was to form the Leakesville Presbyterian church which was formalized on November 29, 1891.
The Methodists in Leakesville kindly allowed these determined Presbyterians to meet in their church until the Presbyterians completed their own church sometime after 1892. This would be the spiritual home for the members ongoing to the present day. Unfortunately, this first church which the members had worked so hard and diligently to build was blown over by a storm. A concrete block church was then constructed and dedicated by 1913, but sadly only three years later this sanctuary was also destroyed by a storm; hurricanes being a menace for the area. In 1917 this small, undefeated and undiscouraged congregation again rebuilt the church using the concrete blocks from the second church as a foundation. This new sanctuary with the addition of Sunday school rooms still stands and serves the people to this day.
Time takes its toll on our beloved buildings as it does with people, and our church building is showing serious signs of wear and tear. This small congregation, many descending from the original founders, are now facing the formidable challenge to repair and once again make strong and safe this venerable, old home of worship, caring love, and sharing. We no longer have the advantage of a huge logging industry and associated sawmills to supply our materials, or able members to participate in the building or repairing of the church; therefore, we must turn to professional contractors to do the work and large corporations from which supplies must be purchased. We are now turning to good people who can contribute to keep this important and beloved church intact.
