With heavy hearts, we share the devastating news of the passing of Sumit Poonia, a 23- year-old student from Haryana (India), who tragically lost his life in a road accident in Ottawa, Canada, on the day of Diwali — a festival meant to celebrate light, but which turned into a day of darkness for his family and loved ones.
Sumit came to Canada with big dreams and hopes of creating a better future for himself and his family. He was a hardworking and sincere young man, loved by everyone who knew him. Despite being a student, he worked tirelessly to support his widowed mother back home in India.
Sumit lost his father around 8–10 years ago, and since then, he had been the pillar of strength for his family — especially for his mother, who raised her two sons alone with immense courage and sacrifice.
Now, this unimaginable tragedy has left his mother and brother heartbroken. The family wishes to see Sumit one last time and perform his final rites in their hometown in India.
My name is Chander Shekhar Arya, and as a member of the community and good friend of Sumit & Sahil, I am helping to raise funds for Sumit’s family. The funds collected through this campaign will be managed by Sahil Kumar, who was Sumit’s close friend and housemate in Ottawa.
Since Sumit’s immediate family resides in India, they have officially authorized Sahil in Canada to handle all arrangements related to the repatriation process, including coordination with the funeral home, the High Commission of India, and transportation. I am assisting Sahil throughout this process.
All repatriation expenses will be covered from the collected funds, and the remaining amount will be transferred directly to Sumit’s mother bank account in India via bank transfer to support her during this difficult time.
Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference. Please keep Sumit and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you for your love, support, and compassion during this heartbreaking time.
