PBY 9767 recently participated in the Warriors over the Wasatch Air & Space Show at Hill Air Force Base in Utah. While setting up a few touch-and-go water landings, a small mechanical failure caused one of the landing gear doors to tear off and the other door right after it. When the doors separated, they punched a hole in the aircraft allowing water to begin entering the hull. After the aircraft made a full coasting stop on the water, a large-scale semi was brought in to tow the PBY-5A out of Willard Bay and onto dry land. After assessments by the chief mechanic and Coy Pfaff (Director), approximately $75,000 will be needed to purchase parts and make the necessary repairs for PBY 9767. $25,000 will be required to start the process of returning the "Princess of the Stars" to the sky.
