Help Renzo, Samuel and Claudia to overcome their battle against cancer

Hi, we are Juan and Milena. We are fundraising for our friends Renzo, Claudia and their little 2-year-old son Samuel. They are a small and beautiful Colombian and Chilean family.

We wanted to share their story as they narrated it to us, but no words could describe the sorrow and distress in their voices.

The following is the medical story as told by Claudia:

“In August 2021, Renzo went to his GP, as he felt a lump in his neck . After conducting some tests, the doctor dismissed his symptoms and sent him home with nothing but the same pain and an odd feeling. He pushed his GP many times as he knew something was wrong.

On November 2021, a neck specialist diagnosed him with reflux and treated him for four months, but, Renzo was still experiencing pain. Sometime later, in August 2022, Renzo was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer, and our world came crashing down.

Renzo went for surgery to remove cancer from his neck, but, He had been wholly misdiagnosed; my husband was informed that they had made a massive mistake and that it was not papillary cancer but in fact medullary thyroid cancer. We were being struck by awful medical updates continually without a break.

We also just discovered that cancer has spread and is present in his liver as well. Renzo just wants to be around to see our son grow into a happy and healthy young boy.”

With Samuel’s Asperger's syndrome, and the possibility of Renzo's cancer being hereditary, this family is experiencing a lot of suffering. Samu has had masses detected in his neck; for this, he will need other tests and treatments, which he will have to undergo in the next few months.

Their health insurance as international students doesn’t cover any of the medical expenses for Renzo or Samu, as they do not have access to Medicare. All of this has put them in extreme financial and emotional distress.

Due to his health, Renzo as the primary provider, can no longer work, and the person who carries all the economic and emotional burden of this problem is Claudia; she has been the strongest and bravest woman we’ve ever met. Despite all the weight she is carrying on her shoulders, we see her fight tirelessly, and we cannot allow this to be in vain; we can only say, please help.

Ayuda a Renzo, Samu y Claudia a superar esta batalla

Hola a todas las personas a las que les llega este mensaje, somos Juan y Milena Esta no es nuestra historia, pero si la de nuestros amigos; una pequeña y hermosa familia Colombo-Chilena (Renzo, Samuel y Claudia). Ellos están afrontando la batalla más grande de sus vidas, y esta es contra el cáncer.

Esta es la historia médica contada por Renzo y Claudia:

"Cuando en agosto del 2022 fui diagnosticado con Cáncer Papilar de tiroides, realmente se nos vino el mundo abajo. Esta es nuestra historia. En agosto del 2021 mi esposo fue a su GP, ya que sentía una protuberancia en su cuello justo abajo de la manzana de Adán, mi GP desestimo mis síntomas y me envió a la casa diciéndome que no era nada, volví al mes, ya que la dichosa bola no desapareció y ella insistió en que no era nada y probablemente era producto de mi imaginación, volví nuevamente en octubre del 2021, por el mismo motivo a lo cual mi GP decidió mandarme a un especialista al ver mi insistencia.

En noviembre del 2021 un especialista de cuello y cabeza me introdujo una cámara por la garganta y me diagnóstico con reflujo y me dieron tratamiento por 4 meses para ello. Al tiempo después al ver que mis síntomas no desaparecían busque una segunda opinión, quien me dijo inmediatamente que era la tiroides, me hicieron un ultrasonido y una biopsia posterior confirmo lo peor… Positiva para cáncer papilar de tiroides.

Después de esta Operación quirúrgica, se le informa a mi esposo que se habían equivocado y que no era cáncer papilar sino cáncer medular de tiroides. Otro examen se le realizó tiempo después y los doctores otra vez le dijeron que no era algo de que preocuparse, pero al realizarle más estudios, le dijeron que ya tenía presencia en el hígado." Tienen un hijo de dos años y medio muy tierno y carismático llamado Samuel.

Samu aún no habla, ya se han consultado expertos y necesita sesiones de fonoterapia, tuvieron acceso a 5 terapias que les otorgo el gobierno, pero se necesitan más, las cuales tienen que ser costeadas por ellos porque el seguro médico no las cubre; tampoco tienen medicare. Ellos son estudiantes internacionales como muchos de los que han llegado a este País, Aparte de esto Samuel posee síndrome de Asperger. Esto es una lluvia de malas noticias, ya que el cáncer que tiene Renzo puede ser hereditario, a Samuel se le han detectado masas en el cuello; para esto se necesitan otros exámenes, biopsias y tratamientos a los cuales se tendrá que someter en los próximos meses.

Por obvias razones, Renzo ya no puede trabajar y la persona que lleva toda la carga económica y emocional de este problema es Claudia, ella ha sido la mujer más fuerte y valiente que hemos podido conocer porque a pesar de todo el peso que está llevando sobre sus hombros, la vemos luchar incesablemente, y no podemos permitir que esto sea en vano, solo nos resta decir ayuda por favor.
