Help Renee Wells Get Home

Donation protected
Renee Wells , 80, is a nationally recognized accessibility consultant for cultural institutions. If you know Renee, you know that she has the heart of a kindergarten teacher - her love of learning and laughing, of people, and of helping others is central to everything she does.

Renee now needs your help to travel from California to Middlebury, Vermont this early November.

In January 2020 Renee left Vermont to go to California to help her family through some health concerns. She intended to stay a month or two to help, and then return home to Vermont. During that time, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Renee was stranded in  California, reliant upon a generous friend to continue to host her in tight living conditions. Renee then seriously broke her foot that has required numerous doctor visits and physical therapy sessions.

Renee has now been in California for over 9 months. She has been attempting to find a way to get home to Vermont. Her doctors have said it's not safe for her to fly due to her foot injury, but they have cleared her to take the train. Due to her age and other risk factors, she is high risk for the coronavirus and must take precautions (a private sleeper car, board at smaller city train stations that are not crowded, etc.) to prevent her contracting the virus. Friends across the country will be hosting her at different points of her journey.

If you know Renee, you know that she is constantly traveling and is usually at home wherever she goes. Renee has remarked that for the first time in her life, she is desperately homesick and wants to be back in Vermont as soon as it's safe for her to do so. She wants to be home, and knowing New England winters as she does, she knows that she needs to return before the snow begins.

Please donate whatever you feel comfortable with to help Renee get home!

I'm Christena Gunther, Renee's friend, and I will share all proceeds with Renee to help her pay her train and travel expenses for her cross-country journey. Renee and I became friends in 2007 when she advised me on my master's thesis on museum accessibility. In true Renee fashion, she quickly endeared herself to me, and then my entire family. She continues to speak to my brother, Travis, nearly every day.
