Help Preserve a Rare Holocaust Artifact Honoring LGBTQ+ Survival
Created by Sandra Scheller, Founder of RUTH: Remember Us The Holocaust.
The price of this artifact is $125,000, and thanks to the kindness of our community, we have already raised $85,000. Now, we are just $40,000 away from securing a rare and historically significant Holocaust artifact: a uniform worn by a gay Holocaust survivor—accompanied by his castration certificate and a photo of him wearing the uniform. It is the only one of its kind. Together, we can make this happen.
This artifact tells a powerful story of persecution, survival, and resilience that must never be forgotten. With the support of ABC News San Diego, we are raising awareness of this extraordinary opportunity.
A Chilling, Vital Chapter of History
I have spent the past five years curating Holocaust exhibits throughout San Diego County—educating, honoring, and ensuring the world never forgets. Through RUTH: Remember Us The Holocaust, we have reached thousands of students, families, and community members with stories of resilience, loss, and hope.
Now, I need your help to preserve one of the rarest and most powerful artifacts I have ever encountered:
A concentration camp uniform marked with the pink triangle—the symbol the Nazis used to identify and persecute gay men.
A photograph of the survivor who wore it.
A harrowing document in which he volunteered for castration—a devastating choice made under unimaginable persecution, simply because he was gay.
This was the last uniform he wore. His story is one that history has too often buried—but we cannot allow it to remain hidden.
Why This Matters
This artifact is more than fabric and paper. It is a symbol of survival, resilience, and truth. It honors those whose suffering has too often been left out of the Holocaust narrative.
Our vision is to preserve and protect this artifact, and one day display it in the permanent home of our Holocaust Museum—a space dedicated to remembrance, inclusion, and truth.
What Your Gift Will Support
Acquisition and conservation of the artifact
Archival preparation and display, ensuring its preservation for future generations
Museum development efforts, to create a permanent educational home where stories like his will never be forgotten
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure an artifact that tells a silenced chapter of Holocaust history—one that speaks not only of Jewish persecution, but also of the suffering endured by gay men, Romani people, and so many others.
Remember Us. Remember Him.
Your donation will help ensure that this survivor’s story is preserved, honored, and shared with the world.
Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to safeguarding his legacy and making sure his suffering was not in vain.
