Help Reyna and her Family Fight against ALS

To my friends, family, and community:

My name is Reyna Mendez. Less than one year ago I was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also know as Lou Gehrig’s disease).

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that leads to muscle weakness, paralysis, and eventually a loss of the ability to breathe. In the past year I have already lost the ability to move and am now losing the ability to speak.

ALS has no known cure and is extremely expensive to manage, requiring in-home medical and personal care. Due to this disease I cannot work and need financial help.

I am also the mom of an 8-year-old child with special needs who is in the Somerville Public School system. Before I die, I would like to leave a fund for my son so he can continue to go to school and get the support he needs. Part of the money raised will also help my family pay for the funeral. Me llamo Reyna Méndez. Hace menos de un año me diagnosticaron con ALS (Esclerosis Lateral Amiotrófica, también conocida como la enfermedad de Lou Gehrig).

La ALS es una enfermedad neurodegenerativa y progresiva que provoca debilidad muscular, parálisis y, a la larga, la pérdida de la capacidad de respirar. En el último año ya he perdido la capacidad de moverme y ahora estoy perdiendo la capacidad de hablar.

La ALS no tiene cura conocida y su tratamiento es extremadamente caro, ya que requiere cuidados médicos y de una persona que ayuda cuidarme. Debido a esta enfermedad no puedo trabajar y necesito ayuda económica.

También soy madre de un niño de 8 años con necesidades especiales que asiste a la escuela pública de Somerville. Antes de morir, me gustaría dejar un fondo para que mi hijo pueda seguir con la escuela y recibir el apoyo que necesita. Parte del dinero recaudado también ayudará a mi familia a pagar el funeral.
