When Hurricane Melissa tore through Western Jamaica, it left behind a trail of devastation. One such heartbreaking impact is the destruction of the community of Castle Mountain, Bethel Town, Westmoreland, Jamaica, more specifically my mom's home. What was once a place of warmth, laughter, and love is now unrecognizable.
Writing this is not easy; asking for help never is. But in the wake of Hurricane Melissa, we (Windel and Shadae Reid-Egbert) find ourselves with no other choice and with hope that compassion still carries power. The Reid family home in Westmoreland, Jamaica, was devastated by the storm. As our family home is now uninhabitable, close friends and neighbors are doing everything they can to support, but the road to recovery is long, and we can’t walk it alone.
What Was Lost
The hurricane didn’t just damage walls and roofs; it upended lives. The Reid family lost:
- Their home’s structure and foundation
- Furniture, clothing, and essential belongings
- School supplies and personal keepsakes
- A sense of stability and peace
- They are now displaced, facing the overwhelming task of rebuilding from the ground up.
Why We’re Asking
This fundraiser is a joint effort by the Reid and Egbert families to raise funds for:
- Rebuilding the Reid family home: materials, labor, and safe shelter.
- Replacing essential clothing, bedding, and household items, child support, school supplies, and emotional recovery
- Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to restoring a home and a sense of normalcy.
How You Can Help
We know times are hard for many. But if you’re able to give, your kindness will go directly toward helping a family rebuild their life. If you can’t donate, please consider sharing this campaign with your community.
This is a difficult ask, but it comes from a place of deep need and deeper love.
Thank you for reading, for caring, and for standing with the Reid and Egbert families.
With gratitude and hope.
