Sometimes, our animals don’t come in as bonded. Sometimes, they find their other half while they’re at the shelter.

Meet Reid and Sloppy Smurf. Reid joined us from TX at 3.5 months; Sloppy was 21 days. Reid came to us without a family, Sloppy came with hers… and then was left behind when she got sick and all of her siblings got adopted. Reid was in the same boat- he was vomiting and developed mange. Sloppy had abnormalities developing in her eyes. We combined the two misfits and it was truly love at first sight.

Reid got better, quickly. Sloppy did not. She was diagnosed with feline infectious peritonitis, which was previously a death sentence for cats and kittens. There is now a treatment for FIP but it’s not a guaranteed cure. Sloppy is on her second round of medications, but is getting a newer oral form of medication and is getting better every day. During the time she has been getting treated, Reid has been there to comfort her. When Sloppy is feeling well enough, they’ll play. When she’s not feeling great, he’ll stay by her and groom her relentlessly.

Reid, then, also developed FIP. Scientists and veterinarians previously thought this virus was NOT contagious but more recent studies are suggesting it may be. Reid is doing wonderfully on medications. He and Sloppy are still together. They’re fighting this fight, together.

We need funds to continue this medication for our lover-cats. The treatment consists of 84 days of oral medication, which comes out to $3000 for a full treatment for both of them. Sloppy hasn’t given up on us and Reid and I haven’t given up on her. The medication is expensive.
