Help Refugee Family Fund First Car

Donation protected
Hello Dear Community,

My daughter, my husband and I are refugees. We landed in the US 4 months ago and have been struggling to make the ends meet.

As a family we are in a desperate need of a running vehicle. Having found a job as a mover, my husband spends 2 hours on three busses to get to work, works an extremely physically demanding job which leaves his back strained often, then he takes as much time to get back home, for a total of four hours and six busses of commuting per day. Our daughter barely gets to see her father because of how much time he spends working and commuting. Almost all his pay goes toward paying rent but at least it has allowed us to move out of the homeless shelter.

Because schools are closed and I need to look after our 5 year old who is attending school over Zoom. I am doing my best to find babysitting jobs, but due to COVID, people are understandably weary of sending their children to babysitters and I can’t get to almost anywhere without a car. Also my daughter has to come with me to work because we have no relatives here to help with childcare.

We don’t qualify for unemployment benefits because we don’t have enough prior work history in the US having arrived just 4 months ago and having spent half of that time in a homeless shelter. We also don’t qualify for the COVID stimulus checks due to our legal status as asylum applicants. (Stimulus checks are only distributed to citizens and green card holders.)

We desperately need a car to go to work, doctor appointments for my pregnant self, pediatrician, ESL classes, job training, etc. We are a hard working family and know how to live below their means. We have learned to make use of food banks in order to put food on the table but we can still barely scrape together money for rent every month. It’s just everything is stacked against us right now and we are asking for a little boost from the community to get back on our feet.

Once we gain mobility, my husband wants to start training as a plumber while still maintaining the moving job part time and I will get a job as a home care aid or nanny outside of home. With that we are confident that we will get back on our feet. We are a young family. We’ll get training, we’ll get jobs and reach self-sufficiency provided we have a car to go to jobs, English classes and training.

We hope, and at the same time know in our hearts, that despite the hard times, God and people will send us help. Please donate to our first car fund even if it’s just $2. May your family be happy and healthy.

Thank you,

Grateful family.
