The First Presbyterian Church of Wewahitchka, Florida, stands as a beloved and admired historic Carpenter Gothic church. Consecrated on November 26, 1903, as St. John the Baptist Episcopal, it has been a place of worship for Episcopal, Catholic, and Presbyterian congregations. First Presbyterian is the oldest public structure in Wewahitchka. Tragically, on October 10, 2018, the church faced devastating damage from Hurricane Michael, a Category 5 hurricane, which shifted its foundation and threatened its very existence. Since then, our dedicated congregation has worked diligently to secure grants from FEMA and the Florida Department of Historical Resources, making significant strides toward restoring our beloved church to its former glory.
We are reaching out to you because we still need your support. Numerous projects not covered by these grants require immediate funding. Most recently, our Fellowship Hall, the current location of our services, suffered extensive flooding due to the blockage of roots from one of the city's oldest trees, which had grown through the sewer line. There is much to be done, including replacing the old jalousie windows, installing a mini-split HVAC system for the Sunday School rooms, and addressing the damage to carpets and flooring. Interior doors also need urgent replacement due to the flooding.
Most importantly, our church faces an immediate financial need for General Liability and Property insurance, a requirement under the FEMA grant, which can cost upwards of $10,000 per year. Your contributions can make a real difference in helping us overcome these challenges and preserve our church for future generations. We prayerfully ask for your support.
