HELP REBUILD VALENCIA REHEARSAL STUDIOS

Slovenly Recordings would like to send out our deepest condolences to anyone in Spain who lost loved ones - or has suffered a traumatic experience - in the recent floods. We managed to get there for a couple of days in early November to help out, and saw the devastation firsthand.

Satu, longtime friend and bassplayer of WAU y los ARRRGHS!!! has, over the last 10 years or so, built a massive rehearsal studio complex in the industrial area of Massanassa, which is very close to Paiporta, the area worst hit by the floods. The bottom floor was under at least 5 feet of water. Check the line on the wall:

Of the 75 rehearsal rooms, almost 50 are on that bottom floor, along with 4 rooms used to store musical equipment. All of it drowned, and when the waters subsided, everything was left caked with mud.

Despite everything, Satu is really glad (and lucky) to be alive. He was on his way to the rehearsal studios when the flood waters came rushing down from the mountains. No one expected them - it wasn't raining in that area, and the authorities failed to warn people. He was in his tour van - the one he's had for almost 20 years and has toured WAU and 100 other bands in. He drove it to higher ground and climbed to the roof, where he waited over 6 hours for the waters to subside, powerless to do anything but watch as the disaster unfolded around him. First of all, if you have any way to get to Valencia, Satu can definitely can use some help. The day we were there, we began mopping out 2 of the rehearsal rooms (one of them being WAU's - photos attached). What we did was just the beginning of what needs to be done to bring the place fully operational again. Besides removing water & mud, everything needs to be dried out and disinfected to prevent mold - which was already starting to grow less than a week after the floods.

Satu walks an hour to the studios every day to clean (the van that saved his life no longer runs). Some days, he's there alone cleaning, and three weeks later, he's still waiting for news from his insurance company. Over 50 bands lost all of their equipment, which already represents a massive blow to the Valencian music scene. If the insurance company doesn't pay up, the entire rehearsal complex might have to be shut down. To help prevent that, we have set up this crowdfund.

Valencia is the other hometown of Slovenly Recordings, and if you check our catalog you'll see that over the years we've released records by over 10 different artists from the area. Slovenly has put this campaign together to collect funds needed to clean and rebuild the studios. Donations will go directly into Satu's bank account in Valencia. Slovenly Recordings quiere enviar sus más sentidas condolencias a todos aquellos que hayan perdido a seres queridos o hayan sufrido una experiencia traumática en las recientes inundaciones en España. Nosotros pudimos ir allí durante un par de días a principios de noviembre para ayudar y presenciar la devastación de primera mano.

Satu, amigo y bajista de WAU y ARRRGHS!!!, ha construido durante los últimos 10 años un enorme complejo de estudios de ensayo en la zona industrial de Massanassa, que está muy cerca de Paiporta, la zona más afectada por las inundaciones. La planta baja estaba bajo al menos 1.5 metros de agua; en la foto arriba se ve la línea de agua en la pared. De las 75 salas de ensayo, casi 50 están en la planta baja, juntos a 4 salas utilizadas para almacenar equipos musicales. Todo quedó inundado y, cuando las aguas bajaron, todo quedó cubierto de barro.

A pesar de todo, Satu está muy contento (y afortunado) de estar vivo. Iba de camino a los estudios de ensayo cuando las aguas de la inundación bajaron a borbotones de las montañas. Nadie las esperaba: no llovía en esa zona y las autoridades no avisaron a la gente. Iba en su furgoneta de gira, la que tiene desde hace casi 20 años y en la que ha estado de gira con WAU y otras 100 bandas. La condujo hasta un terreno más alto y subió al tejado, donde esperó más de 6 horas a que bajaran las aguas, sin poder hacer nada más que observar cómo se desarrollaba el desastre a su alrededor. Las aguas llegaron hasta el techo, como se puede ver en la foto arriba.

En primer lugar, si tienes alguna forma de llegar a Valencia, Satu necesita una mano. El día que estuvimos allí, comenzamos a limpiar 2 de las salas de ensayo (una de ellas es de WAU; fotos adjuntas). Lo que hicimos fue solo el comienzo de lo que se necesita hacer para que el lugar vuelva a estar completamente operativo. Además de eliminar el agua y el barro, todo necesita secarse y desinfectarse para evitar el moho, que ya estaba empezando a crecer menos de una semana después de las inundaciones.

Satu camina una hora todos los días hasta los estudios para limpiar (la furgoneta que le salvó la vida ya no funciona). Algunos días, está allí solo limpiando, y tres semanas después, todavía está esperando noticias de su compañía de seguros. Más de 50 bandas perdieron todo su equipo, lo que ya representa un golpe enorme para la escena musical valenciana. Si la compañía de seguros no paga, todo el complejo de ensayo podría tener que cerrarse. Para ayudar a evitarlo, hemos creado este crowdfunding.

Valencia es otra ciudad natal de Slovenly Recordings, y si revisas nuestro catálogo verás que a lo largo de los años hemos publicado discos de más de 10 artistas diferentes de la zona.
