For more than 40 years, Ugi’s Subs has been part of the heart of Roxbury. Since opening in 1981, the shop has served generations of families, neighbors, students, workers, and longtime residents. For so many people, Ugi’s is tied to memories of growing up in the community, stopping in after school, meeting friends, seeing familiar faces, and returning to a place that always felt familiar. At the center of it all is Tony, the owner, whose dedication over the decades helped make Ugi’s more than a business. Ugi’s became a place where Tony knew the customers, customers knew Tony, and the community felt like family.
That is why this loss has been so heartbreaking. A devastating fire destroyed the shop and everything inside it, leaving this longtime neighborhood institution facing the unimaginable challenge of starting over. This fundraiser will help Tony and Ugi’s move forward by purchasing and establishing a temporary Ugi’s food truck so the name, food, and connection to Roxbury can stay alive during this difficult transition. Donations will also help cover permits, licensing, insurance, and other startup expenses, replace equipment and furnishings lost in the fire, restock supplies and inventory, and support reopening a permanent location in the future.
Ugi’s has given so much to Roxbury for decades, and now it is the community’s turn to give back. The goal is not only to rebuild, but to bring Ugi’s back for longtime customers, families, and future generations. Whether someone grew up eating Ugi’s, stopped in after work, brought family there, or simply believes in supporting a small business that has meant so much to Roxbury, every donation can help Tony take the next step. And if donating is not possible, please share this fundraiser and help spread the word.
