The Recycled Orchestra of Cateura is a youth orchestra from Cateura, a poor community in Paraguay built near a landfill. The children play instruments made from trash—like oil cans, pipes, and scrap wood—built by a local recycler and music teacher. The group shows how creativity and music can bring hope and opportunity even in difficult living conditions. In the early hours of Monday, September 4, a powerful landslide caused by heavy rains destroyed part of the school where the Recycled Instrument Orchestra of Cateura operates in Paraguay, internationally famous for turning landfill waste into pieces with which they play their music. The landslide caused significant material loss in the building structure and damage to more than 50 musical instruments.
3rd Grade students at North Broward Preparatory School (NBPS) are stepping up to help. Led by Reenat Pinchas and Kalyn Rothaus, students and parents will host a fundraising event where they will create musical windchimes from recycled materials. The artwork will be displayed around the school and in local communities, with a QR code linking to this GoFundMe page to encourage donations. Funds collected will be used to acquire materials and equipment, rebuild the destroyed music school and collapsed classrooms, and recover, repair, or replace more than 50 musical instruments.
We invite you to support this fundraiser and help restore hope and opportunity for these young musicians. Your generosity will make a lasting impact on their lives and the community.
