Help Rebuild the Country House Restaurant

On Friday, September 27, 2024, Lansing, North Carolina suffered crippling flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Helene. Nearly every business in the small town of roughly 125 residents was knocked offline. The Country House Restaurant, Lansing’s oldest restaurant, was among those badly damaged. The restaurant has been owned and operated by the same family for over 25 years. I’m Brian Cheuvront and I live part-time in Lansing, NC. I volunteered to help the Country House get back on its feet.

The restaurant served three home-cooked meals a day nearly every day of the week. COVID made operations difficult, but the restaurant persevered. The damage from the “Flood of 2024” shut them down completely. The Country House provided reasonably priced and tasty meals to many local folks who couldn’t afford some of the higher-priced establishments in Ashe County.

The physical damage to the Country House building was extensive. The water didn’t enter into the street-level kitchen, but it destroyed the basement of the building, including severely damaging the building’s foundation. The large propane tank used for powering the cooking equipment broke loose and needs to be replaced. All of the interior spaces and equipment in the basement were damaged. It all needs to be replaced.

The family is awaiting results from engineering studies to determine whether the building can be saved. If it can’t, the family may want to replace it with a smaller building. The family wants to do what is safest and most cost-effective. They cannot wait to rebuild and get back to serving great quality food to Lansing’s residents of more modest means and anyone who just wants a good quality home-cooked meal.
