My name is Aneka Hylton-Donelson from Cheverly, Maryland, and my heart belongs to St. Elizabeth, Jamaica — my family’s hometown and where my parents, Patrick and Winnifred Hylton, and much of my extended family live.
Just one year after surviving Hurricane Beryl, our community has been devastated again — this time by Hurricane Melissa, the strongest storm ever recorded in Jamaica. On October 28th, St. Elizabeth was caught directly in the eye of the Category 5 hurricane. Homes, farms, and small businesses were destroyed. Power, water, and communication lines remain down, and many families have lost everything.
For over 24 hours, we didn’t know if my parents had survived. Thankfully, they are safe — but others weren’t as fortunate. Our family’s small hotel, Taino Cove, a beloved part of the community for over 20 years, has suffered heavy damage and faces an uncertain future.
While global organizations are beginning to help, direct relief to small communities like ours will take time. Families, farmers, and small businesses need immediate support to rebuild roofs, restock food, and restore livelihoods.
Here’s how your donation can help:
• $50–$100: Food, clean water, and essential supplies for families
• $150–$250: Equipment for small businesses and fishermen
• $300+: Repairs for community centers and schools
St. Elizabeth is built on resilience, love, and pride. With your help, we can rebuild and rise again — stronger than ever.
With gratitude,
Aneka Hylton-Donelson
