Help Rebuild Sardis for 100-Year Celebration

For nearly a century, Sardis Missionary Baptist Church has been a pillar of faith, community, and support in Cleveland, Ohio. Since opening its doors in 1925, Sardis has provided a safe space for worship, fellowship, and guidance for generations. But now, Sardis needs your help.

Due to the challenges brought on by the pandemic, the church was forced to close its doors. Since then, it has suffered extensive damage, making it unsafe for services. We are currently working on new ceiling tiles and paint but the church needs more extensive work for the doors to open again. With insurance unwilling to cover the costs, we are turning to our community and kind-hearted supporters to help us restore this historic church in time for its 100-year celebration in May 2025!

At the heart of Sardis’ mission is Rev. Samuel Lee Williams, a dedicated leader and servant of God. A Cleveland native, Rev. Williams has been married for many years to his childhood sweetheart, Beverly Stein-Williams. Together, they have three children—Tamika, Tiffanie, and Jordan—and are proud grandparents to Rhyon and Sana.

Rev. Williams graduated from East High in 1965 and later pursued degrees in mental health, human resources, and pastoral counseling at Cuyahoga Community College, Capital University, and Ashland Theological Seminary. His journey in ministry began in 1991 when he became the pastor of Gladstone Baptist Church.

After continuing his theological studies at South University, he was appointed as interim pastor at Sardis and, on April 28, 2019, officially became its pastor. Under his leadership, the church flourished—introducing new ministries, growing the choir, and improving church facilities. His wife, Sister Williams, played a vital role in strengthening the church’s outreach by establishing a food pantry and a community kitchen to serve those in need.

Despite the church’s progress, the pandemic forced Sardis to close in 2022. With the congregation unable to gather in person, Rev. Williams launched conference call services to keep the faith community connected. During this time, Sardis also documented its rich history through anniversary booklets and continued its outreach efforts.

Now, as Sardis approaches its 100-year celebration in May 2025, Rev. Williams and the congregation pray for the restoration of the church building, so they can once again worship together in person.

With faith and your support, we look forward to reopening our doors, welcoming back our congregation, and continuing our mission of faith and community outreach.
