A Video of Hope for Sabahettin's Family

Living in tents that flood with almost every rainfall, Sabahettin and his family face daily hardships after losing their home to the recent earthquake in Hatay, Turkey. With a small market that brings in little income and stands on a street that now feels empty, they struggle to make ends meet. And yet, despite all they’ve lost, Sabahettin, his wife Sevim, and their five children—Meryem, Hussein, Ali, Bilge and Bengi—are some of the kindest, most hospitable people we’ve met. Every time we visit, they welcome us with warmth and generosity, even when they have so little left of their own.

Their house was destroyed in the quake, leaving them to endure two winters with barely any heating, cooking, cleaning and doing laundry out in the open on a plot of land they’ve turned into a garden—right across from where their home once stood. This garden, cared for by Sevim, is a sanctuary of fruit trees and herbs—some of which are rare in Turkey—though it has seen better days, as they lack funds for seedlings and fertilizer to keep it thriving.

Since the earthquake, our volunteer group has been present in the area, working to support families through relief supplies, funding scholarships, and other efforts A few months ago, we were approached by an individual wishing to donate approximately $25,000 for a project that would directly assist a family impacted by the disaster. We immediately thought of Sabahettin’s family and proposed building them a new home. To ensure the project was sustainable and well-planned, the donor requested a detailed review of all materials and costs, down to the last detail. It took us a couple of weeks to gather all the specifics, but when we returned with the plans, we were shocked to learn that the donor had already redirected the funds to another project, citing the brief delay in our response.

Even with this setback, we couldn’t bear to go back on our promise. We’d shared the news with Sabahettin’s family, and they’d begun to hope. So, using funds from our group—originally intended for a community center—we started the construction from the ground up. The house is now partially complete, with the exterior finished, but we still need around $9,000 to finish the interior. This includes wall plastering, doors and windows, tiling for the kitchen and bathroom, and the electrical wiring. The conduits and plumbing are in place; what remains is to bring the inside to life.

Our goal is to complete the house before winter arrives, sparing this wonderful family another season of harsh conditions in tents. We hope to give them a place to call home again, a place where Sevim can tend her beloved garden, and beautiful crafts, and the family can start to rebuild.

Hatay’da yaşanan son depremde evlerini kaybeden Sabahettin ve ailesi, neredeyse her yağmurda su basan çadırlarda yaşamak zorunda kalıyor ve her gün yeni bir zorlukla mücadele ediyor. Aile, küçük bir marketten kazandıkları sınırlı gelirle geçinmeye çalışırken, artık boş ve sessiz görünen bir sokakta yaşam mücadelesi veriyor. Ancak tüm bu kayıplarına rağmen, Sabahettin, eşi Sevim ve beş çocuğu—Meryem, Hüseyin, Ali, Bilge ve Bengi—bugüne kadar tanıştığımız en nazik ve misafirperver insanlardan bazıları. Her ziyaretimizde, sahip oldukları az şeyle bile bizi sıcak bir şekilde karşılıyorlar.

Deprem nedeniyle evleri yıkılan aile, iki kışı neredeyse hiç ısınmadan geçirmek zorunda kaldı. Yemek pişirme, temizlik ve çamaşır gibi temel ihtiyaçlarını açık havada, evlerinin bir zamanlar bulunduğu arsanın karşısında bahçeye çevirdikleri bir alanda gidermeye çalışıyorlar. Sevim’in büyük bir özenle baktığı bu bahçe, meyve ağaçları ve Türkiye’de nadir bulunan otlardan oluşan bir sığınak niteliğinde. Ancak maddi yetersizlikler nedeniyle tohum ve gübre alamadıkları için bahçe eski canlılığını kaybetmiş durumda.

Depremden bu yana gönüllü grubumuz, bölgedeki ailelere yardım malzemeleri sağlayarak, burslar finanse ederek ve çeşitli destek projeleri yürüterek yardımcı olmaya çalışıyor. Bundan birkaç ay önce, yaklaşık 25.000 dolar bağış yapmak isteyen bir kişi bizimle iletişime geçti ve bu fonun doğrudan bir depremzede aileye yardım için kullanılmasını istedi. Hemen Sabahettin ve ailesini düşündük ve onlara yeni bir ev inşa etmeyi önerdik. Bağışçı, projenin sürdürülebilir ve iyi planlanmış olması için tüm malzeme ve masrafların detaylı bir incelemesini istedi. Bu bilgileri hazırlamak birkaç hafta sürdü, ancak planlarla geri döndüğümüzde, bağışçının kısa süreli gecikmeyi gerekçe göstererek fonları başka bir projeye yönlendirdiğini öğrendik ve büyük bir hayal kırıklığı yaşadık.

Bu aksiliğe rağmen, verdiğimiz sözü tutmaktan vazgeçemezdik. Sabahettin ailesine bu haberi paylaşmıştık ve onların umutlanmasını sağlamıştık. Bu nedenle, gönüllü grubumuzun sosyal merkezi için ayırdığı fonları kullanarak inşaata sıfırdan başladık. Şu anda evin dış kısmı tamamlandı, ancak iç mekanın bitirilmesi için hâlâ yaklaşık 9.000 dolara ihtiyacımız var. Bu bütçe, duvar sıvaları, kapılar ve pencereler, mutfak ve banyo fayansları ile elektrik tesisatı gibi çalışmalar için kullanılacak. Su boruları ve altyapı hazır; geriye yalnızca iç mekanın tamamlanması kaldı.

Amacımız, kış gelmeden önce evi tamamlayarak bu değerli aileyi çadırda bir kış daha geçirmekten kurtarmak. Onlara yeniden “evim” diyebilecekleri bir yer, Sevim’in bahçesiyle ilgilenebileceği ve ailenin hayata yeniden tutunabileceği bir ortam sağlamak istiyoruz.
