My name is Ismail Halil, 40 years old, and my wife Maryam Halil is 30 years old. We have one child, Majed Halil, who is 5 years old. Majed came into our lives after repeated fertility treatments. He had a beautiful life and had just started attending kindergarten with so much excitement. He had his own room, bed, toys, and many other things.

We used to live in Gaza, but we were forced to flee to Rafah under heavy bombardment. Our area faced severe attacks, and we had no choice but to leave Gaza after receiving evacuation notices. We fled with nothing but the clothes on our backs, leaving behind everything we owned. Under relentless shelling, we reached Rafah and stayed there for a short time. However, we were again ordered to evacuate, and this time we lost even more of the little we had left. Eventually, we received another evacuation notice to leave Rafah after being contacted by the occupying forces.

We left, not knowing where to go or where we could stay, until we arrived in the Al-Zawayda area. There, we found only streets to shelter in. With whatever we had left, we built a makeshift tent – just a tarp above us and blankets on the sides. Now, winter has come with its bitter cold, piercing through our bodies and our little Majed’s fragile frame.

Since the war began, I have been unemployed, with no source of income to support my family. Initially, we survived on aid from shelters, but now even that has stopped. There are no opportunities for work. I am deeply worried about Majed – his immune system is weak, and his health is deteriorating. He has no toys left after everything was destroyed by the bombardment and constant displacement.

Majed no longer knows the comfort of a room, toys, or a proper bed. He sleeps scared every night. Our family of three now lives in a tent no larger than 4 meters.
