Hello everyone, Happy New Year 2026. I pray that this year brings us all health, happiness, and success.
I am Ray of Hope, a humanitarian volunteer working to spread the word to help victims of flash floods in Sumatra, Indonesia.
From late November to December 2025, devastating flash floods and landslides struck Aceh, North Sumatra (Sumut), and West Sumatra (Sumbar), triggered by extreme rain and a tropical cyclone.
According to the official Indonesian government channel, through the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), as of January 3, 2026, the death toll reached 1,167 (Aceh had the highest number of victims: 540), 165 missing, and nearly 400,000 displaced. This was one of Indonesia's worst disasters, exacerbated by deforestation and extreme rain.
The Heartbreaking Tragedy of the 2025 Sumatra Floods Mud and logs swept through villages, destroying homes, farmland, and hopes. Thousands of families have lost everything—orphans, elderly people without medicine, farmers without land. A Ray of Hope volunteer who met Mr. Junaidi in North Aceh said that ten members of his family were lost in the landslide. He survived by running to the hills. Furthermore, many children who lost their families are now living alone.
Through Gofundme, we are letting all our brothers and sisters know that there is a great deal of grief in Aceh and Sumatra that needs our help and assistance.
Ray of Hope has a fundraising goal of $150,000, which will be used for:
- Purchasing food aid for 3,000 refugees in isolated areas
- Milk for 293 toddlers and children
- Medical supplies
- Clothing and blankets
- Building water catchment wells in 10 locations
- 100 tents
- 10 generators for nighttime lighting
- Seeds for farmers who have lost their livelihoods
