The Juneau Shotokan Karate Club has been a cornerstone of the Juneau community for over 40 years, teaching traditional karate and self-defense to hundreds of students. Our dojo has always been more than just a place to train—it’s a family, a place where people of all ages come together to learn, grow, and support one another. We are a small nonprofit (501C3) dedicated to passing down the teachings of Gichin Funakoshi, focusing not just on martial arts, but on self-control, self-awareness, balance, and community.
Recently, our community suffered a devastating blow. After several feet of heavy snow, the roof over our beloved dojo collapsed, leaving the building a complete loss. The dojo was our home, and its loss has deeply affected everyone involved. Despite this tragedy, our commitment to teaching and supporting the Juneau community remains strong. We want to continue offering low-cost karate and self-defense classes, but to do so, we need to rebuild.
Rebuilding our dojo means more than just putting up new walls. We need to create a space with proper changing rooms, a special floor for workouts, an office, and bleachers for parents to watch and support their children. Our members are eager to keep practicing, learning, and growing together, but we can’t do it alone. We are heartbroken by the loss of our dojo, which has touched so many lives over the years. Please help us recover from this tragedy so we can continue serving the Juneau community and keep the spirit of karate alive for future generations.
