The fires in Northern California have ravaged Shasta County this summer and Camp David was in all 3 of the fires paths. The Carr fire came with in 3 miles and the Hirz fire came with in 3-4 miles and ultimately the Delta Fire burned down Camp David during the first week of September. Dave evacuated two times due to the Hirz and Carr Fire and my step father was barely able to escape the fast moving Delta fire. Thank you to the firefighters who warned him. The Delta Fire started 9/5/18 and has burned over 60,000 acres and 17 structures., 3 of which were Dave’s.
Who lives at Camp David and what is Camp David? For the last 18 years Dave has lived off the grid at Camp David !! Camp David was a mountaiside homestead that was comprised of a hand made 500 square foot wood cabin made from the evergreens on the property and a 100sf outhouse/bathroom. There also was older28ft 5th wheel trailer that housed the stove and propane refrigerator. The cabin consisted of a bed, dresser, couch, table and chairs, wood stove and all of Dave’s possessions. There was no running water or electricity, Dave’s basic needs were met with ice chests, battery powered lights, a propane mini fridge and then occasional generator.
Dave is a 66 year old man who has been plagued by a long term back injury over the last 20 years. Over the last few years has had 2 hip replacements, 2 shoulder and a wrist surgery . He recently had a quadruple bypass December 2017 and was back at Camp David with in a month after his surgery. Even though he had a massive surgery there was nothing that could keep Dave from his mountain side property, no matter how hard we tried to keep him at his daughters house there was no stopping him. Dave has been very generous to his family often going without to help them. He hasn’t had electricity or running water for almost 20 years and still helps out his family when they need it.
The Delta Fire consumed everything on the property. The trailer, cabin and outhouse/bathroom have been turned into a pile of ash and twisted steel. All of Dave’s belongings, clothes, and furniture and 3 vehicles are gone. Even all of our childhood pictures are lost forever. All the trees are burned to a crisp. Dave’s beloved 56 Jimmy which he has had since he was 16 was also burned in the fire. To top it all off the Fire was the same week as his birthday. Dave has nothing left. He has been staying with family and friends and is dreaming about returning.
Dave wants nothing more to rebuild Camp David , even though everything is burned to the ground and the earth is scorched. Everything on the property was “off the books / off the grid” there is no insurance on any of the structures that were burned. He has to start from scratch However due to a limited fixed income and limited physical capabilities he is dealing with it makes rebuilding Camp David an impossible dream.
However with your help we can rebuild Camp David!
(Priority1) I would use the donations to rebuild the 100sf outhouse/ bathroom which is the minimum lawful requirement to live on the property . (Priority2) If we obtain the full amount or more I would rebuild a small cabin, with the capability to accept running water and electricity. The second option would be to purchase and install a small manufactured home. I would choose the most cost effective option between the two (If the funding goal is met or exceeded Priority1 will be bypassed). (Priority3) Install electrical service and running water for the cabin/home. Finally replace basic furniture and housewares, repair or replace the vehicles lost in the fire.
