My parents spent their whole lives giving to others. My mom was a full-time nurse, and my dad was a social worker. They did foster care, raised five daughters, and opened their home and cabins to anyone who needed a place to rest. They weren't wealthy, but they worked hard and saved everything they could to buy those cabins—not for themselves, but for us. They wanted us to grow up with nature, to run through the woods, to swim in the creek. We grew up there, and it shaped who we are.

My parents property was burned in the Aspen Acres fire. My parents are in their 70s. My mom is on oxygen and has serious health issues, and my dad has his own health concerns too. On the morning of the fire, they grabbed only their pets and their medications. No clothes, no photos, nothing. They escaped with only what they could carry. At their age, they should be resting, not worry about starting over. My parents have never asked for help. When I told my dad I wanted to set this up, he said no he didn't want to be a burden. But this is a time when they truly need help.
