Help rebuild a life lost at sea!

Story

Imagine losing your home, your possessions, and your entire way of life—twice.
That’s exactly what happened to our dear friend, Alex Carter, a devoted sailor whose boat was his home. While sailing through the Gulf of America, disaster struck. A catastrophic rudder failure left Alex adrift while taking water. He was eventually rescued by a container ship, but his sailboat, ACID RAIN, was left to the mercy of the ocean. For 5–6 weeks, it drifted alone across hundreds of miles before finally washing ashore in an extremely remote part of coastal Louisiana, battered, broken and instantly burglarized. The boat didn’t sink—but the recovery will be very challenging. Most people would have just given up by now but this guy just won't quit. His stories his determination and zest for life keep on inspiring many. The area where it landed is almost inaccessible, and getting it out will require a heavy-duty truck and crane, and coordination with environmental services of costs that he just can’t cover alone. And time is critical—not just for salvaging what’s left, but for preventing environmental damage to the delicate coastal ecosystem. This isn't the first time he's faced unthinkable hardship. Last year, while living aboard the same boat in Guatemala, he suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage and massive clotting to the brain causing several strokes and had to be emergency evacuated, he only just escaped with his life. When he finally returned to his boat he also went out of his way to help a dying man—Peter Beckett from New Zealand—trying to save his life in a race against time. He’s given everything to the sea and helped others along the way. Now he needs our help. We’re raising funds to get ACID RAIN off the beach, cover recovery and transport costs, and give Alex a chance to begin rebuilding. If you care about the sea, the environment, or simply believe in helping someone who's always helped others, please consider donating. Every dollar makes a difference—and even if you can’t give, sharing this story is just as powerful. Let’s show him that even when the ocean takes everything, humanity gives it back. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/peter-beckett-mercy-dash-how-english-yachtie-tried-to-save-ex-napier-councillor-in-guatemala/HUOABIEZU5HU7CAGIOSNPEI5ME/ https://americanpress.com/2025/05/10/with-help-from-locals-british-man-whose-ship-ran-aground-has-sights-set-on-sailing-home/ A massive thank you to everyone who's already donated. With the help of the beautiful community of Cameron they recently managed to remove the masts and made Acid Rain as light as possible for removing. Due to the urgency of getting it to safety with the extreme weather conditions and dangerous tides, the crane company agreed to do the job on a loan basis and therefore I have decided to keep the gofundme going as any money raised will go towards paying off the crane company. Acid Rain is now in a safe place and a plan is being put together to make a new rudder and to rewire all the electronics which were ripped out. We are very grateful for the continued support and interest in this unique chain of events.
