My aunt and cousin have lived together for years in a quiet, rural part of Tennessee. My aunt, who is elderly and frail, has always found comfort in the home her late husband built with his own hands. Tragically, the Sunday night before Thanksgiving, their house caught fire and burned to the ground. Thankfully, they made it out safely, but they lost everything except the clothes on their backs, a small outbuilding, and a detached barn. Living in such a rural area, they did not have homeowners insurance, so this is a complete loss for them.

These two are incredibly close to me. When I was very little, my mother was a single parent who had to work to support us, so my aunt often took care of me. I spent countless hours in that house, making memories that shaped my childhood. My cousin is like a brother to me. I am an only child, and he has always been there, helping me move and joining me on road trips. My aunt and cousin are both very private people and do not know we are doing this GoFundMe for them. If they did, they would probably encourage us not to. But they are wonderful people who have spent their lives helping our family and others, and my aunt especially did not deserve to face this loss, especially at this late stage in her life.

Right now, our family is doing everything we can to help with food, clothing, and temporary shelter. But my aunt and cousin long for the independence and comfort of having their own space again. The biggest priority is renovating the barn that survived the fire so they have a functional place to live on their property. Donations will go directly toward renovation costs, and if we are able to raise enough, toward supplies for eventually rebuilding a proper home.
