Rebecca has been in the photography scene and owned her own company for 13 years… (BEX Photography and BEX Sports) both business were very successful over the years and she even won the “Best in B-Town” award two years in a row… but not too long ago her husband passed away unexpectedly at 36 in a car wreck leaving her a widow with raise 3 kids alone.
Without her husband at home to watch their children on evenings and weekends for her to go do photo shoots, she had to leave the photography game behind to take on a full-time day job with consistent income. And so suddenly right before Christmas. Trying to suddenly be the only income in the family and with Christmas coming up quickly, she was forced to sell for her new Nikon Z6 she just got (she saved a long time for that) to be able to purchase Christmas presents for her kids, and was down to owning just her D750 and a 24-70 mm F/2.8. However, she wasn’t upset because her kids were happy with their Christmas presents, she was happy to be able to get them some. Plus, her D750 and that lens were her trusty favorites.
But after years of being a manager and running the units of a psychiatric hospital, the injuries from patients kept racking up, and it got to the point where she had to have two different surgeries due to work injuries. But to add insult to injury, once she left the dangerous job after her second surgery, she began having serious health problems. She has consistently high blood pressure that they are having a lot of trouble meaning being, she’s been diagnosed with coronary artery disease, is now seeing a cardiologist, and a pulmonologist as well because they found a 7mm nodule in her lungs. She also just had a surgery less than two weeks ago to remove a mass off her abdomen that they have now determined to be endometriosis. So that will be one of the next things being addressed, along with seeing a pulmonologist and continuing to see a cardiologist.
The consistent doctors appointments, tests, surgeries, and a recent three day and two night stay in the hospital with many more upcoming appointments, and possibly another surgery in the future has left her, unable to take on a full-time job. But to make matters much worse, she recently found out that her 14-year-old son has severe scoliosis, a 74° curve of his back, and will be having a major spinal fusion surgery in August. Surgery will be performed at Riley Hospital in Indianapolis and she will need to stay with him for three days in the hospital and at home with him for at least three weeks while he recovers. Not to mention all of his appointments (MRI, CT, Neurosurgery, Pre-op, post-op, etc). So once again, she is unable to take out a full-time job at this time.
However, she is in a place now where she does have the opportunity to go back to doing photography, which was always her passion, and she has so many fans and clients begging her to come back… but there’s one issue….
Her oldest son borrowed her camera for a wedding he was working on… but sadly left her camera, lens, and her shoe flash that were in a camera bag in his at the time his car got towed. Her son tried several times to go get his belongings (and her camera) but they always had an excuse. So she called the tow company herself and they informed her that they threw the whole camera and bag IN THE TRASH. I’m not buying that at all, someone from that tow company took it. But even the police told her there’s nothing she can do.
So now she is back to square one, hoping to get back to doing what she loves because not only do so many people miss her and her work, it’s only of the few things she can do and work around the crazy schedule of doctors appointments, procedures, and surgeries her and her son are both facing. And an income would be insanely helpful because SS Death benefits don’t cover near everything.
She’s built her way up from a point and shoot camera taking photos for friends, but really got going when her late husband bought her her first DSLR - a Nikon D50! She has since worked so hard she had her own studio (before he passed, she had to let that go too), worked and saved and bought a Nikon D750, the 24-70mm lens, shoe flash, and some lighting equipment. And of course the mirrorless Z6, but she didn’t get to keep that long at all before he passed and she had no choice.
So as a fellow photographer who met Rebecca on the sidelines of a football game where she was there shooting for the local paper, she was very kind and helpful. Always happy to share any tricks of the trade to help someone get better.
She’s always been a selfless person, offering help to other photographers, doing shoots/work for charity, and even taught some classes at the local schools to get kids more interested in learning the trade.
Since she’s always helping others, and has worked so hard to build a very successful business, just to have to lose everything due to losing her husband and equipment from a towing company who says they threw it in the trash ….. I thought it was a good idea to try to give back and help her to be able to purchase and replace her equipment so that she can get back to earning money for her and her children and regain her livelihood and sense of purpose.
Even just looking to replace her equipment with some good used equipment that could get her going would be helpful so if you’re able to donate these two, and if you’re not, please share either with people, you know, other photographers, other groups, anything helps.
Thank you for taking the time to read about this fellow seasoned photographer who could really use our support and help right now.
God bless
