For those of you who do not know, My girlfriend Rebeca has been critically ill in the ICU for over eight weeks. She has been hospitalized continuously since Halloween, spending Thanksgiving and Christmas in intensive care, and will enter the New Year still fighting for her life.
What began as a heart attack quickly became a cascade of life-threatening complications. She has suffered respiratory failure requiring a ventilator and tracheostomy, acute kidney failure requiring dialysis, a stroke, seizures, severe fluid overload with pulmonary edema, liver injury from shock, and ongoing issues with blood clots and active bleeding. She remains bedbound, extremely weak, and is still being weaned from the ventilator.
Because of the tracheostomy and ventilator dependence, she is currently unable to speak and can only communicate in limited ways until she is strong enough to breathe on her own.
Despite everything, she continues to fight. She is awake, follows commands, recognizes loved ones, and is slowly making progress with breathing trials and beginning physical therapy to rebuild strength lost during her prolonged ICU stay. Her recovery is long and uncertain, but she has already overcome odds we were once told she wouldn’t.
Because of the length and complexity of her illness, I have had to stop working to remain at her bedside as her medical surrogate and advocate. This has created overwhelming financial strain, including daily costs for gas, food, and transportation just to be present at the hospital.
She is currently uninsured, with Medicaid pending. To ensure she can continue receiving appropriate and safe care close to home, I enrolled her in a private health insurance plan through open enrollment. That coverage begins soon, but it comes with significant upfront costs. Without it, she risks being transferred far from home or losing access to the level of care she still urgently needs.
This fundraiser is intended to help cover:
$575 monthly health insurance premium
$2,100 insurance deductible
Hospital-related and basic living expenses while I remain by her side
Our goal of $3,500 will not solve everything, but it will help ease the immediate financial pressure during this critical time.
Any donation, no matter the size, makes a difference. If you’re unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser helps more than you know.
Thank you for your support.
