Raza, a young refugee living in Thessaloniki urgently needs an operation to prevent amputation of his leg.
About one year ago, Raza was attacked, suffering a stab wound to his thigh. As a result of this, he unfortunately lost all sensitivity in his right foot and developed a foot drop. Then four months ago, Raza stepped onto glass, leading to a minor but ultimately devastating wound of his heel. Due to his loss of sensitivity, the wound gradually got worse, without him noticing any warning signs like pain or infection.
He first presented to our Medical clinic in Thessaloniki 3 months ago, with a deep wound in his right heel. He was referred to hospital, but his treatment was refused due to lack of medical insurance. Our clinicians treated his wound conservatively for about a month, and after initial improvement, the wound became infected necessitating surgical debridement. After removing necrotic and infected soft tissue, he was left with exposed bone making him susceptible to infection and the very real possibility of needing an amputation.
In order to prevent this, an operation covering the soft tissue defect with a skin-muscle-flap from his calf is necessary and urgent. We consulted a plastic surgeon, who will do the operation, but since he has no insurance this will have to be covered privately. Due to the incredibly difficult circumstances of displaced people on the move he is not eligible for insurance or housing putting him at extreme risk of serious infection. The cost of the operation is 1000€, but we will also need money for post-operative care, since Raza is homeless and will need accommodation to ensure healthy healing. Any donations given above and beyond the amount needed for Raza will be saved for other patients or used within the organisation to help with equipment etc.
We are therefore asking for your help. Your donation can save his leg. Please support Raza to maintain an independent life and save him from amputation.
