Help Ray Through a Medical and Financial Crisis
Those who know Ray Ions will already be aware of his ongoing medical challenges. Over the years, Ray has bravely dealt with several significant health issues, including diabetes, and complications such as cellulitis. But the past two years have been especially devastating.
It began with pain in his foot — pain that grew so severe he could barely walk. After months of misdiagnoses and testing, Ray was eventually diagnosed with Charcot Foot, a rare and serious complication of diabetes that causes the bones in the foot to collapse. He underwent major reconstructive surgery, but unfortunately the operation didn't go as planned. Further surgeries followed, along with infections that prolonged his recovery and left him unable to return to work.
After exhausting his sick pay, Ray was eventually dismissed on medical grounds due to the length and uncertainty of his recovery.
And then came another blow: a serious liver condition that now threatens his long-term health even further. It is painfully clear that Ray will not be able to return to meaningful employment again. We're pursuing medical retirement on his behalf, but the process is long, complex, and still ongoing.
In the meantime, Ray has no income apart from a small PIP payment, which isn’t enough to cover his basic needs like rent, food, or hospital travel. He is a proud man and would never ask for help himself — so I’m doing it for him.
We’re hoping to raise enough to help Ray cover basic living costs during this difficult time.
Ray is one of the most generous, thoughtful people I know. We began our journey together 23 years ago working on the Tyne and Wear Metro. He’s always been the first to help others — even when struggling himself. My family loves him dearly, and he’s been there for every birthday, celebration, and hardship. Now it’s time we give something back to him.
Please consider making a small donation — every pound truly helps. And if you can't donate, please consider sharing this page so others might.
Ray doesn’t know about this fundraiser. He’s proud and would never ask — so let’s keep it quiet until we can surprise him with some relief and if sharing on social media, please remember to block him from seeing your post.
Thank you so much for your kindness and support.
