On October 27th, everything about our 11-year-old son’s life changed. Only 10 days after his birthday, Ray was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. He went into Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) — a life-threatening condition — and spent two terrifying days in the children’s ICU, followed by two more on another floor receiving the best care we could have hoped for.

During his hospital stay, Ray was visited by several service dogs. Despite his pain and fear, those dogs brought him comfort and joy in a way nothing else could.

Ray’s diagnosis means a lifetime of constant work to keep his body functioning. He is 100% insulin-dependent and will have to monitor his blood sugar around the clock for the rest of his life. Even with the help of modern technology, there is always a risk of malfunction, error, or dead batteries — and as parents, that’s a risk that keeps us awake at night.

On the day of his diagnosis, before he was transferred from Hudson to Children’s Hospital, all Ray could think about was getting a medical alert service dog. As he sat in the ER, weak and frightened, he talked about a puppy that could help keep him safe — a best friend who could alert him (and us) when his blood sugar drops dangerously low or spikes too high.

As his mom, I would have promised him the moon that day. But all I could promise was that I’d find a way to make that dream come true.

I had no idea just how expensive these highly trained medical dogs are — the training alone can cost tens of thousands of dollars. But the peace of mind and safety they bring is truly priceless.
