I have seen too many people afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease and sadly many of those people have been left lonely and afraid in the care of a nursing home because providing care at home is a difficult and expensive undertaking. My brother Ray and his wife Karin, were married in 1974. They have no children, but for nearly fifty years they have been devoted to one another. In August of 2016, Karin was diagnosed with Dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease. She was 65 years old. By November of 2019 her condition worsened to the point where she was mostly bedridden. Today she can’t talk, feed herself, or take care of herself in any way. She is helpless and totally dependent. Ray vowed that he would care for her in their home until one of them passed on. He has kept that promise, but as I said before, it is difficult and expensive. Ray and Karin have lived a modest life and are not wealthy people. The price of medical supplies and help from paid at home caregivers can become overwhelming. Ray is nearly 70 years old and has health problems of his own but he is determined to keep his vow to the person he loves most in the world. Alzheimer’s patients are trapped. They can’t always express themselves, but they can feel. They can feel frightened and confused and they can also feel loved and cared for. Karin is at ease in the home she has shared with the man she has loved for so many years. Please give what you can to help Ray keep his promise to care for his wife until death do they part. Thank you.
