On December 22, one of our team members, Breddyn “Raul” Moncada-Rincón, a 45-year-old Venezuelan asylum seeker and Albany-area resident, was unexpectedly detained by ICE while attending a routine immigration appointment.

Since arriving in the Capital Region in 2023, Raúl has worked tirelessly to rebuild his life. He obtained legal work authorization, followed the law, paid taxes, and became a valued and trusted member of our community. He began as a volunteer at Capital District Latinos and later secured a part-time custodial position, eventually earning a full-time role through his dedication and work ethic.

Raúl is hardworking, respectful, gentle in spirit, and deeply devoted to his family. He is always looking out for others, especially those facing hardship.

Raúl fled Venezuela after refusing to cooperate with criminal groups, seeking safety and stability for his family. His journey to the United States was long and difficult, traveling through multiple countries under dangerous conditions. In doing so, he left behind his mother, siblings, homeland, familiar traditions, and language in pursuit of safety and the opportunity to build a better life.

Our friend’s detention has left his teenage son and loved ones facing profound uncertainty and fear; his absence has deeply impacted a community that has embraced him and respects him. As of this writing, his family has not heard from him in over a week. Despite our collective pain, we are reminded that strength cand be found in unity and collective action.

Through the support of community members, we were able to borrow $2,500 to retain Buffalo, NY immigration attorney Matthew Barrowski to represent Raúl in his habeas corpus proceeding. This amount must now be reimbursed, which is partly why we have created this GoFundMe.

We are seeking to raise funds to:

• Reimburse the borrowed attorney retainer

• Cover Raúl’s bond (which has not yet been set)

• Assist with any additional legal expenses as his immigration case continues

All funds collected will be used solely for Raúl’s legal status, including attorney fees, bond, and related legal expenses. Our goal is to give Raúl a fair chance to return to his family and continue the life he has worked so hard to build.
