Help Randy fund La Familia Gym

Hi there,

I put this campaign together to help Randy.

Randy has been helping kids for years right here in Longmont through the program and gym he created, La Familia Gym.

He teaches kids how to box.   And he funds the entire kids program largely by himself.

He works 60 hours a week as a supervisor at Western and teaches commercial driving lessons part-time.

His boxing program is after school, for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week with strict rules: no fighting outside the ring; no drugs; and keeping positive grades.

His kids are winning titles both in-state and across the region. Hilario made it  to the third round of the Olympic trials.  And right now, they are training for the current Olympic trials.

This article tells his story better than I could:

"When Randy Lopez was a young boy, he didn’t have a father figure. He was raised by a single mother who tried to provide for five children in a conservative generation, so the cards were stacked against his success. Randy felt a lot of anger regarding the situation, and channeled that frustration in other outlets. He took up boxing, but couldn’t maintain the discipline he needed to endure the sport.

He began building bicycles to stay out of trouble and became extremely efficient in his craft, while still maintaining his passion for boxing. He decided that the best way to help other kids was to give them something that he had always wanted.

Randy teamed up with a local juvenile Judge, youth centers, and juvenile detention facilities, and started recruiting violent and lost kids. “I would take in the meanest kids and give them a chance,” Randy said. “If they were addicted to drugs, alcohol, or trapped in gangs, they were given the option to clean up and join the program.”

He trains these kids, travels and brings them to national tournaments.  "I just did not have that father figure to take me under their wing to mentor me. So, that is why I did it because no one did it for me. So, I am able to do it for these guys. I take these boys and kind of make them mine. I never had a son, so these are the sons I never had," said Lopez.

COME TO HAPPY HOUR
I'm hosting a happy hour at the local and awesome, Boulder Beer Brewery & Pub
2880 Wilderness Place
Boulder CO 80301

on Tuesday, May 9th from 5:30 to 730.  We'll have an open bar, beer, wine and Logan's BBQ and Randy will be there.

It costs $20k a year to support this program.  All funds will go to this charity and help his costs.  If you can donate boxing equipment, your time, or whatever you like, meet Randy on Tuesday and let him know.

These guys are committed to excellence.

Thank you for whatever you contribute.
