Our sweet senior Rakel has had quite the year. Instead of spending her final years relaxing in a warm, safe home this sweet girl found herself at a municipal shelter in Greece. She presented with a large hanging mammary tumour that needed to be removed and was also fully blind in one eye.
Two mastectomies followed and after recovering in foster care, she returned to the shelter. We couldn’t stand to see Rakel spend her senior years in a shelter so worked with the volunteers at her shelter to bring her to Canada so she can have a comfy, warm, and spoiled retirement.
Before leaving Greece another vet visit identified a few more medical concerns– Rakel once again underwent surgery for dental issues and was spayed. The vet examined her eye but advised it did not need to be removed.
This brave lady made a long journey to Canada where she went into foster care with an experienced family, several dog buddies, and a fenced in backyard so she can safely explore and sniff the outdoors.
We wanted to ensure Rakel has the best quality of life for her senior years so took her into our vet partner Beaches Animal Hospital after landing in Canada. Our vet partners felt her left eye needed removed – the sooner the better! End stage glaucoma meant that her eye was likely causing her pain from the high pressure (you can see it bulging out in her photos). They also identified some mammary tissue that hadn’t been removed during her two mastectomies and recommended this be removed to prevent further tumors or cancer down the line.
We knew we would need to fundraise to cover the costs but didn’t want to make Rakel wait and proceeded with surgery. We now have an outstanding bill at our vet clinic and need your help to cover Rakel’s surgical and medical follow up costs.
We know nothing about Rakel’s past – most likely she was someone’s pet and dumped when her medical needs became too much of a burden. As a pet in Greece, this doesn’t mean she ever lived in a home. She may have been tied up and lived her life outside.
What we do know is that with your help we can provide Rakel the best senior years – she is estimated to be about 10 to 12 so we promise her final years will be safe, comfortable, and pampered. She will be part of a family and never abandoned again!
Rakel has been recovering amazingly for a senior girl undergoing her fourth (!!!) surgery in a year. As she had no vision in her left eye, there has been no adjustment period for her vision and much comfort and relief in having the bulging eye removed. She’s back to following her dog buddies around the house and yard and making use of her amazing nose to sniff everything and anything!
Please help us cover the costs of Rakel’s recent surgery and vet bills in Canada. Play a part in helping Rakel live the best possible final years. We greatly appreciate any amount you can contribute and would also ask that you help by sharing sharing Rakel’s fundraiser.
Thank you!
