Please help contribute to our effort to raise money for the four victims affected by a house fire that occurred Monday morning, June 10th, in East Syracuse, NY. Each of these four victims uniquely connect with a portion of the Syracuse community. As their friends, families, and fellow community members, we are called to support them in the complex aftermath of this tragedy.
Beth Ann Newkirk's vibrant exuberance, curiosity, and unwavering passion for knowledge remain influential on her surrounding communities of friends, co-workers, and fellow classmates. With her engaging personality and love for others (whether it be people, animals, and even fossils), Beth easily made an impression on those around her. Her spirit spoke for itself, perceivable even to those she met only in passing. Her family may experience financial burdens in the aftermath of the fire which we would like to relieve as much as possible while they grieve Beth's unexpected passing.
James Appleton, former student of Georgetown University, was also critically injured by the fire. He remains in critical condition and has lost all of his belongings. This week, while James was resting in the hospital, the nurse joked (rather seriously) that she has never seen a patient with so many friends in her whole career as a nurse. Her comment will make a lot of sense to those who know James. He is singlehandedly one of the most popular people I know. No matter where he is, he always seems to know somebody there, and he will likely have a hilariously idiosyncratic story to follow that he will tell you while excitedly pacing. James is one of my best friends, and it is not unrealistic to surmise that he is probably yours too. Donating to this GoFundMe will help relieve James of at least some of the huge financial burden he faces and assist in replenishing many of his lost belongings.
Sara Ann Potocsny, my dear friend and mother to two-and-a-half-year-old Sol, resided with her son on the first floor of the Buckingham Avenue home. Sara and Sol escaped the house quickly and without injury. Their belongings were destroyed in the fire. Sara is a Syracuse University graduate student of the M.F.A program in Creative Writing. Community members may know her as a mother, close friend, talented poet, involved community member and activist, and dedicated student, as well as a teacher with both Syracuse University and Dr. Weeks Elementary School within the Syracuse City School District. On any given day of the week, Sara Potoscny can be found always moving. Her passion is scattered across and embedded in the many pursuits, both old and new, that she invests her time in. This call for funding is inspired, in part, with the goal in mind of helping her to continue doing that. Since moving to Syracuse in 2013, Sara has worked to be an impactful and engaged resident of the Syracuse city both within the University systems as well as the surrounding, often left-behind, communities of Syracuse. Please help Sara continue to do what she does best, what many of us know her for doing, and what she has always done.
Our community is being called to work together to support the victims and their families in the aftermath of this sudden trauma. Because this was an unexpected emergency, funding is needed as soon as possible.
