On February 27, my beloved Aunt Cheryl suffered the first of two strokes at home and then suffered from an ischemic stroke on the way to the hospital. She survived the stroke, but was left paralyzed on the right side. My aunt has insurance but the deductibles are high and the bills are mounting. She completed her hospital stay and was transferred to an acute rehab center where for 3 weeks she struggled to maintain use of her right side.
 

While in the hospital, they detected a mass in her pelvic area. They discovered that the mass was a fibroid tumor that had grown to the size of a grapefruit and was pressing against her bladder and urethra. So in addition to the hospital stay for her stroke she is going to have to endure another operation within the coming weeks to remove it. This is a major operation, and Aunt Cheryl is recuperating at home in order to get authorization for the surgery from her primary care provider. Her responsibility towards the hospital bill will be upwards of $20,000 and she will need to have continuing care including a speech therapist, physical therapist, and occupational therapist. She will require this intensive care for at least a year.
