Help TJ Get the Safe Bed He Urgently Needs

Our Story

My name is Melissa, and I am fundraising for my son, TJ.

TJ is a 16 year old disabled young person with complex needs who requires a specialist high-low safety bed to keep him safe while he sleeps. Tj has a rare disease called Pitt Hopkins syndrome, scoliosis, profound global development delay and a unsafe swallow. Tj is non verbal and is nil by mouth.

Unfortunately, Tj has outgrown his current bed. A standard single bed mattress is 190cm in length but his current bed mattress measures 160cm and Tj is 173cm in height. We have had to remove some of the padding so he has alittle extra length but by taking the padding away it has left him with more chances of hurting himself. Tj currently falls into a "grey area" where professionals recognise there is a need for specialist equipment, but obtaining funding and support for the bed he needs has proven extremely difficult.

A recent referral has been made to assess his bedroom, but we have been told that changes to the room alone will not solve the problem. The reality is that TJ needs a specialist bed designed for his needs.

The bed we are trying to raise funds for is a padded, profiling high-low safety bed. This type of bed would:

- Help keep TJ safe during the night.

- Reduce the risk of injury from falls or impact.

- Allow carers to support him more safely.

- Provide a more comfortable and secure sleeping environment.

- Give our family peace of mind knowing he is protected while sleeping.

As a parent, it is heartbreaking to know that a piece of equipment exists that could significantly improve TJ's safety and quality of life, yet it remains out of reach because of funding barriers.
