I'm currently at risk of being homeless in NY and need help ASAP raising much needed funds to pay rent. My current sublease agreement is up on November 30th, and I am not able to afford the costs of current rent, in addition to rent and moving costs to secure a new place. I don't usually ask for help and have a hard time accepting or receiving assistance, but I am running out of options and don't know how else I can keep doing this all on my own.
As a queer, lantinx artist who is self employed, I have lost wages, and countless opportunities to create the income that I usually would through grants, fellowships, commissions through museums, artist talks, and general sales of artwork due to the many closures during Covid 19. As I continue to look for more stable means of income, I am scraping by with my unemployment of $160 per week, which is no longer enough to cover my current rent, let alone prepare to move and put down a first months and security on a new space.
With these funds, I will be to pay any outstanding rent and utilities due by the 30th. Approx. $200. and provide a way to keep me from having to be out in the street looking for new a place. Most of the shared housing options that I have been in contact with run on average $700/mo plus utilities, so the remaining funds would allow me to secure a safe place through the next few months while I continue to look for work.
Since the end of the month is around the corner, I am asking that folks consider any amount to donate, ASAP. I will keep this going in the event that an eviction process begins, while not sure how long CDC Covid protection extensions will cover tenants here in New York.
I am deeply grateful and humbled by any and all financial help, generosity, and compassion shown to me during this time of immense adversity. This is unfortunately an extremely difficult time for many of us across the globe facing so much loss and grief amidst this uncertain turmoil. My heart goes out to you with hopes for a sign of peace in the near future.
