We are deeply saddened by the recent events in Atlanta. The tragic murder of 7 innocent women in Atlanta massage parlors sheds light on the reality of many immigrant women's lives. We live in a society that profits from fetishizing Asian women, as is revealed in the $2.5 billion illicit massage parlor industry. The majority of women who work in these businesses are newly arrived immigrant women from China, South Korea, and Vietnam, who speak little to no English and have children they are struggling to support.
While we do not know the individual stories of these women, we can envision a world in which refugees and immigrants have broad employment and economic opportunities. At RAI, we help newly arrived immigrant women overcome cultural and language barriers and gain self sufficiency and financial independence. Our artisans come primarily from Asian countries under similar circumstances to the women recruited to the massage parlor industry.
Our vision is to provide every immigrant woman with freedom and financial independence. But we need your help. We are currently seeking $50,000 to enroll TWENTY more women in our medical scrub manufacturing training program, where they receive wages and critical skills they need to become respected and self-reliant citizens.
Please donate here if you are able.
