Hello, my name is Raemond. I am an international student currently studying in Santa Ana, California. I came here with the hope of building a better future through education, never imagining how quickly my life would change.

Before coming to the United States later this year, I lived in Ontario, Canada, for five years. I first arrived in Canada as an international student and later obtained a work permit. I worked hard to establish myself and build a future there, but despite my efforts, I was unable to obtain permanent residency. As a result, pursuing a master’s degree or higher education became extremely challenging. After years of uncertainty, I made the painful decision to start over once again, leaving Canada and coming to California to try my luck as an immigrant who still believes deeply in education and the chance to prove what he can offer.

Even before my diagnosis, I was struggling financially and was preparing to return home to the Philippines because I could no longer afford to continue my studies. My dream has always been to earn a master’s degree in Civil Engineering. While waiting for my bachelor’s courses to be evaluated, I enrolled in an engineering associate design degree at Santa Ana College so I could keep moving forward instead of giving up.

During my finals week, everything changed. On December 5th, I was diagnosed with early T-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a rare and aggressive form of leukemia. Although the diagnosis was frightening, my treatment has started positively, and I am determined to keep fighting. I am currently confined at City of Hope Helford in Duarte, Los Angeles County. Because of this sudden medical emergency, I was unable to complete some of my courses and now face an outstanding tuition balance at a time when I am fighting for my health.

There were moments when I felt completely defeated. However, my battle with cancer has been positive so far, and it has given me a renewed strength. This experience has reminded me why I keep trying despite setbacks. I am fighting not only for my life, but also for my future.

My career goal is to help design and innovate spaces for community living. I grew up valuing strong communities, and I believe that engineering and technology can be used to bring people together and improve quality of life.

Before you go, I would like to share something personal with you. While confined in the hospital, I discovered that City of Hope has a small music room. Music has been a way for me to cope and express what words sometimes cannot. I recorded this short song during one of the most emotional moments of my life, shortly after receiving my diagnosis. I hope it gives you a glimpse into my journey and the hope I am holding onto.
